It's been a whirlwind past couple of months for The Bold and the Beautiful's Linsey Godfrey (Caroline Spencer), who is facing intense recovery after being hit by a car, while also trying to raise her ten-month-old daughter, Aleda. Now comes word that the actress has been nominated for an Emmy in the Outstanding Supporting Actress category. So how has Godfrey been able to gracefully handle everything the world has thrown her way, both good and bad? Soap Central spoke with the actress to find out.
soapcentral.com: Congratulations on your nomination!
Linsey Godfrey: Thank you!
soapcentral.com: This is your first time in the Supporting Actress category, which I hear is a very tough category.
Linsey Godfrey: Yes, it is. There are a lot of ladies I find to be such amazing, talented actresses, and to be considered among them is a very exciting, a very honorable thing. I'm very honored.
soapcentral.com: Did I hear you were at physical therapy when you found out you'd been nominated?
Linsey Godfrey: Yes, I was at physical therapy, and Brad [Bell, our executive producer and head writer] called and left a message, and Mark Pinciotti, our other producer, was texting me, and I said to my physical therapist, "I'm so sorry. Can you excuse me for one moment? I just need to make sure my work isn't on fire or something," and so I pick up the phone, and Mark is like, "Congratulations!" And I said, "Um, for what?" [laughs] And he said I'd been nominated. I was not aware.
soapcentral.com: Once you realized, how did you react?
Linsey Godfrey: Well, I tried to keep it low-key. I didn't want to be in my PT, going, "Yay!" But I was really excited, and [my partner] Robert [Adamson, Noah Newman, The Young and the Restless] picked me up, and I hobbled out to the car and said, "Guess what!" It was one of those things where I played it really cool until I got to an environment where I felt comfortable to be like, "Yay!"
soapcentral.com: Have you thought yet about what you might wear?
Linsey Godfrey: Yes, I already have a dress by this amazing Australian designer named Paulo Sebastian. It's gorgeous, and I can't wait to wear it. I'm very excited about it. It's very different than anything I've worn before.
soapcentral.com: Did you start searching after you found out you'd been nominated, or before?
Linsey Godfrey: Before. I wanted to get it all taken care of. I've had a lot of time on my hands, so I thought, "Well, I should find an Emmy dress, I guess!" I did a few episodes, little bits here and there, but I don't return fully until I think Wednesday [April 15].
soapcentral.com: Do you know yet how they'll handle your real-life injuries on-screen?
Linsey Godfrey: No, they're writing the accident in. I don't know any more than that, but basically, I think they touch on it, and then later, they'll go into depth more about what really happened. It's kind of a fun opportunity for the writers.
soapcentral.com: Were you surprised that B&B didn't have any Leading Actor or Actresses this year?
Linsey Godfrey: I was very surprised by that, yes. I think there are always ebbs and flows in the stories, and sometimes they focus on different people. I think they were really focused on these supporting characters a little bit more this year, but our Lead Actors and Actresses are such immense, huge talents, I mean, they're powerhouses, so it was a shock.
soapcentral.com: When you're in front-burner story for an extended period of time, do you not consider yourself as a Lead Actress?
Linsey Godfrey: No, I don't consider myself as a Lead. I think for me, if you're going to be considered a Lead, you need to be front and center for a long time. I'm not really sure what the qualifications are for you to be considered Lead or Supporting, but for me, I felt like I was Supporting. Even in those scenes [I submitted], I felt like Caroline was supporting Rick [Jacob Young]. I felt like Caroline was the support to Rick's reactions. Even though they were in it together, it's very heavy Rick, and Caroline kind of reacting to him, so I felt like I was supporting him in those scenes.
soapcentral.com: That makes sense. When it comes to Emmy night, the news was just announced that Tyra Banks will be host this year.
Linsey Godfrey: Oh, that's fun! I love Tyra. I think that's exciting. I haven't watched in a while, but I watched probably the first ten seasons of America's Next Top Model, and we have her models on our show all the time, random models from her show on our show, playing the models. They'll walk by, and I'll be like, "Oh, my God, that's Eugena!" So yeah, she's part of daytime with her new show coming out, and for me, it will be fun, because she's so into fashion, so it might be fun to bring a new fashion element to the show.
soapcentral.com: Brad said earlier today during the show's Emmy nomination celebration that you're an inspiration, and I have to tell you, you really are. You seem so together and strong after such a horrific accident, whereas many people would probably fall apart. Are you breaking down in private moments, or are you really keeping it together like it seems?
Linsey Godfrey: Yeah, I try to. I have this really amazing mom that instilled these very awesome philosophies and thoughts in me when I was growing up. She always taught me that things are never really as bad as you think they are, and there is always a silver lining or a light at the end of the tunnel. She kind of always taught us to keep our head above the water, and we always find something funny in tragedy. And I think there's not really an option to fall apart anymore, because I am a mom, and I have to be a strong person at all times and keep my head above water. I was explaining it to my mom, and I was talking to Robert about it last night, because they said, "I don't know how you're doing it," and I said, "It's like I'm standing on a float, like on a raft in a pool, and I can't move, and I don't want to go anywhere, because I'll fall and I'll drown." So I'm just standing on this raft and saying, "This is good!" But I really do have an amazing supporting system between Robert, Amanda, our nanny, my mom, my friends and family, the show, and my best friends. I have a really good support system, so I'm very lucky.
soapcentral.com: Are you a bit nervous to be returning to work? Or is it more excitement to get back in there?
Linsey Godfrey: It's a little bit of both. I'm really excited, but I'm also a little bit nervous. It'll be the most I've been out of the house in a long time, and you want to do good. You want to do good by everybody. You don't want them to be like, "Oh, she shouldn't have come back yet!" [laughs] But I'm excited to be back.
