Gloria Stuart, the Hollywood actress of the 1930s who gained an Oscar nomination 60 years later for her role as the spunky survivor in Titanic, has died. Stuart was 100.

Stuart's grandson, Benjamin Stuart Thompson, says Stuart died in her sleep Sunday night at her Los Angeles home. The actress had been diagnosed with lung cancer several years ago, but it is unclear if that was the cause of her death.

In her youth, Stuart starred in B-movies as well as higher-profile films such as The Invisible Man. She also co-starred in two films with Shirley Temple. However, it wasn't until 1997 that a then-87-year-old Stuart landed the role that would make her a household name -- Titanic. In Titanic, Stuart played the elderly survivor, Rose, a role that earned her an Academy Award nomination.

In 2002, Stuart made an appearance on General Hospital as Catherine, the wife of a legendary Port Charles mobster. Stuart's character told tales of her experiences in 1920s Port Charles. That episode aired on December 31, 2002.

"When I graduated from Santa Monica High in 1927, I was voted the girl most likely to succeed. I didn't realize it would take so long," Stuart mused in her 1999 memoir, I Just Kept Hoping.

Stuart is survived by her daughter, four grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren.
