David filled Vanessa in that Chris was investigating suspicious heart attacks as links to Proteus. Vanessa sarcastically said that she had to be Proteus because of the suspicious deaths of Paolo and Larry. David told her that she wasn't smart enough to be Proteus, but she could be working for him.
Meanwhile, Maggie freed one hand and began pounding on the wall. David noticed and accused Vanessa of having a lover stashed there. She stopped him from investigating and told him that no one else was there. She then changed the subject and told him that she knew all about his secret experiments and secret lab. She threatened to tell Joe Martin about it unless he stayed out of her life.
David told Vanessa that she was getting desperate, and he walked out of the loft. Afterwards, Vanessa returned to Maggie, promising to make David pay. She also yelled at Maggie for releasing her hand and told her that she'd had her last chance.
Anna showed up at the hospital and told a nurse that she was looking for copies of the same records that Agent Stamp had picked up. The nurse told her she wasn't authorized, but Anna gave her Chris's "authorization." The nurse left to get the information as Anna said to herself, "You're good."
Jake told Greenlee they were alone on the island, but Greenlee told him they weren't. He turned around and saw Leo. Leo quickly filled them in on how he'd found them, and Jake politely excused himself to check on Leo's rescue plane. After he left, Greenlee told Leo what Vanessa had tried to do, but he wasn't buying it. He accused her of running back to Jake whenever the going got rough, and he told her she was insecure.
Greenlee got upset and began kicking dirt on Leo. She said that she couldn't believe he would believe his own mother over her, as she showed him the scar from the needle that Vanessa had struck her with. It finally began to dawn on Leo that she was telling the truth. With Greenlee still upset and Leo feeling guilty, Jake returned and told them that they had to leave immediately because his female pilot was upset that Leo was going after a fiancée. Before they could move far, however, they looked up in time to see the plane flying away. All three were upset as they realized they were still stranded.
Leo asked to see Jake's bruise, and he finally realized what Vanessa had done. He apologized to both of them about not believing them and walked away to be by himself. Jake noticed that Greenlee wanted to go with him, but Jake argued with her not to. He told her that Leo was always playing a hurt act, wanting her to comfort him. She couldn't keep falling for it.
Jake told Greenlee that Leo was incapable of love, but she tried to defend him. Finally, Jake said, "Don't. Choose us." She got up and walked over to Leo. When Leo saw her, he gave her a hug as Jake watched.
Kendall pulled Ryan back into the room, before the sniper could fire. She told him to stay away from Mateo, Hayley, and the drug scene. He told her he wasn't worried, and he left again. While the sniper looked on, Erica showed up to see Kendall. Before they got far, Chris and Mateo showed up as well. They pulled Ryan into Kendall's room to talk to him, while Erica and Kendall were left outside to talk.
Chris and Mateo asked Ryan for the disk, but he refused to give it to them until he cleared it with Hayley first. He didn't trust Chris, and he thought that Mateo was wrong to trust him. Mateo said he didn't care and to "give me the damn disk." Chris settled down Mateo and kicked him out so he could talk to Ryan alone. Chris said he cared about Ryan, and someone could try to kill him as long as he had the disk.
Ryan asked Chris why he cared so much. Chris told Ryan to think about the picture with "Stamp of Approval" on the back. He asked Ryan to look at him and said that he had loved Ryan's mother. He had loved her nine months before Ryan's birth. "I'm your father, Ryan. I am," Chris said.
Outside the motel room, Erica told Kendall she was there to see her to talk about Bianca. However, she made an observation that Kendall seemed overly protective of Ryan. Erica told her that Ryan didn't deserve her, and she should stay away from him. They continued exchanging insults, and Kendall reminded Erica of how she'd used Chris and then lost him. Kendall reminded Erica that she liked to collect men. Erica started growing teary-eyed and admitted that she had lost Chris, and it had been a horrible mistake.
After leaving the room, Mateo heard some noise and walked up by the sniper. The sniper ducked around, as Mateo asked, "Who's there?" He turned back around just in time to be knocked unconscious by the gunman. The sniper returned to his post.
David returned to his hotel room and noticed Anna looking over the files. He was impressed that she had taken the risk to get them. He filled her in on his visit with Vanessa, and they were convinced that she truly was hiding something, or she wouldn't blackmail him. Anna wanted to surprise her again, so they both headed over to the loft. Once there, they discovered the loft empty. As they were searching, Anna noticed something on the mantel. She picked it up and showed it to David: a used syringe.
Ryan asked Chris for the whole story. Chris told of how he'd met Ryan's mother and recounted their life in Chicago. He told about how Ryan's mother had stayed with him when she had been on the run from Patrick, how they had fallen in love, and how she had left him. He told Ryan he had only realized the truth about a month before.
Ryan appeared to be listening and believing but then told Chris that the timing was suspicious. He accused Chris of playing that card just to get the disk and destroy it and, along with it, any proof that Chris was Proteus. Kendall and Erica walked into the room as Ryan told Chris that he wasn't believing the lie that Chris was his father. Ryan stormed out of the room.
Ryan walked across to his own room and sat down on the patio as the sniper took aim. Meanwhile, Erica implored Chris to go after him. Chris finally did. As he left the room, Mateo regained consciousness and saw the sniper. He screamed, "Chris, Ryan, sniper!" Chris saw him and ran in front of Ryan just as the gun went off. Chris was shot in the chest and collapsed in Ryan's arms. Erica left Kendall's room and screamed when she saw what had happened.
Dixie talked to her unborn baby that she hadn't drunk milk in ages, but it helped her relax. She worried that JR hadn't arrived back home yet. Soon, she heard Tad's car pull up and headed to the door. JR stormed in, upset, with Tad behind him. He told his mother that he was upset because she was packing to leave. Tad asked exactly where his ex was going. JR suggested that Tad let his mom explain it all.
Dixie explained that she was going to Europe on a six-month course. Tad guessed that JR was upset because he wanted to stay in Pine Valley with his girlfriend. Dixie said she was not going with JR. Tad asked if she was going with David to Europe. Dixie assured him that was not the case. She was going alone and needed to have space to study and settle in Europe. Tad was not buying her story and urged her to tell why she was jetting off to another country.
An upset Dixie told Tad that everything she'd told him was true. He asked her to fill in the blanks that he was not getting. Before she could speak, Tad spotted Dixie's mug with milk in it. Dixie said it was for relaxation. Tad thought it was for a breakdown. Dixie said she was simply trying to rise above the past few years and explore her life. Tad thought it was a fine time, since she'd almost died a few weeks before. He asked about JR. Dixie told him to stop harassing her about her decision -- they were divorced.
Tad backed down and remembered the night he had stopped over to tell Dixie that the court date had been set on their divorce hearing. He recalled that they had made love, and he'd thought they were going to move past their problems and make up. Then she had kicked him out and dashed his hopes. He didn't understand how they could love one another so much but still lose one another. Dixie said Leslie and David had been contributing factors. Tad thought it had started before then -- with her miscarriage and the fact that he had been relieved when it had happened. Dixie disagreed.
Tad continued, saying that if he had it to do all over again, he'd do the same thing as before. He would choose Dixie's life over the baby's any day. They were interrupted by a call from Adam, who wanted to know how JR was. Dixie told him to call back the next day. After the call, Dixie explained that she was simply trying to take control of her life. Tad said that her decision was upsetting JR and could affect her health.
Dixie revealed that she was going to stay with her sister, Lanie, and David had set her up with a cardiologist there. She asked Tad to look after JR. Anything for his love, Tad responded. Dixie said that she had to prepare for "our" trip and needed to be alone to pack. Tad asked who she was going with, since she had said "our" trip. He accused her of going with David. Dixie claimed she was just upset and had used the wrong word -- she'd meant "my trip."
Dixie asked Tad once again to leave. Tad made her promise to call after work. After Tad exited, Dixie made a phone call to the airport to catch the first available flight the next morning to Zurich, Switzerland.
On the deserted island, Leo told Greenlee that he was sorry she had been hurting and blamed it all on Vanessa. He was upset that Vanessa had duped him again. He violently kicked the sand and rocks and later told Greenlee he would never hit her. She tried to console him by saying that Vanessa was just being her usual self. Jake walked in during their conversation and mentioned how good he had it that he had grown up with normal parents.
Leo remembered all the scams his mother had made him pull with her and was disgusted with himself and Vanessa. He thought that he hadn't cut her off enough after she'd framed him for Paolo's murder, unlike David. Leo realized that Vanessa had killed Larry just like she'd killed Paolo and blamed himself for not stopping her from her crimes. Leo later told Jake that he owed him for giving him Greenlee on a silver platter. Greenlee told Leo to cool off.
Jake told Leo that after they got rescued, he was going straight to the cops about Leo's mother. Leo slugged Jake. Greenlee told her man to step away. Jake said they weren't getting anywhere by fighting. Greenlee told Leo to go away. Leo barked that she could spend time with her hero and went as far as accusing Jake of setting up the whole shipwreck plan with Vanessa. Greenlee said that Jake loved her and would never do that.
Leo saw that Greenlee wanted Jake and stormed off. Greenlee almost went after him, but Jake told her to let go. Greenlee said that thanks to Leo's arrival on the island, she had lost her appetite. Jake stroked her hair as Leo looked on from afar.
At Greenlee's loft, Anna got ahold of a syringe and wrapped it up. She told David that they needed to have it dusted for prints and have an analysis done on whatever was in the needle. They wondered who Vanessa might have used the syringe on. The duo headed for the hospital.
At the Pine Cone Motel, Chris took a bullet meant for Ryan and fell. Erica screamed. Ryan assured Kendall and Erica that Chris was okay, but Chris was in bad shape. Erica ordered her daughter to call 9-1-1. Ryan saw that Chris was losing blood. Mateo arrived and said the shooter had gotten away.
As Chris wheezed, he continued to bleed profusely. Soon, David and Anna arrived on the scene, and David went to assist Chris. Mateo accused him of setting up the hit on Ryan. Anna pulled him aside and assured Mateo that she'd been with David all night. Anna told him that her beau wasn't Proteus and asked Mateo to go with her through the alley.
Meanwhile, Chris's bleeding had slowed down, but he was still critical. David said that the bullet had grazed his heart and vessels. David said that he needed to put a hole in Chris's chest immediately. Erica said it could be dangerous, and they should wait for the ambulance. David said it could be too late. "Go for it," Erica replied. Elsewhere, Kendall comforted Ryan as he watched his newfound father fighting for his life. The paramedics arrived and rushed Chris to the hospital.
At the hospital, a paramedic mentioned that David's actions had possibly saved Chris's life. Joe told everyone that Dr. Jacobson would be in soon to operate on Chris. "What about David?" screamed Erica. Joe said that David had been suspended and couldn't operate.
Erica demanded that Dr. Martin forget about David's status at the hospital and let him save Chris before it was too late. Joe gave David the go-ahead. As Chris was rushed to O.R., Erica told him that she loved him. Meanwhile, Ryan flashed back to Chris telling him that he was his real father. Ryan realized his dad was fighting for his life.
Mateo and Anna arrived at the hospital and spotted an FBI agent, Foster, grilling Ryan on why the hit man had been after him. Kendall told him to leave Ryan alone. Anna sidetracked Agent Foster and asked him to have the needle dusted for prints and have its contents analyzed. Anna and Mateo wanted to speak to Ryan in private. Kendall went to Erica to see if she was okay.
Anna and Mateo urged Ryan to give up the disk. Ryan finally gave it up and said that he wanted Proteus dead. Meanwhile, Erica said it was not fair that Chris was fighting for his life. During her heart-to-heart with Kendall, Erica saw Joe and asked for an update. Joe said Chris needed AB-positive blood. Ryan said he had the same blood type as Chris and went to donate.
Agent Foster phoned Anna at the hospital and said the syringe contained a drug used to induce heart attacks, and all three prints on the needle belonged to Mrs. Cortlandt. Anna gave Mateo the news, and he realized that was how the guard who had stabbed him had died.
Kendall once again asked what she could do for Erica. Erica wanted to see her other daughter, Bianca. Soon, Joe returned and said there were complications in surgery. Joe would give more information as it became available. Ryan said he had caused Chris to be shot. Kendall comforted Ryan with a hug.
Anna quietly opened the door to Leo and Greenlee's loft and walked in. She looked around and saw no one else. As she walked to the other side of the room, she heard a noise. She grabbed a book off the coffee table and tossed it across the room then quickly hid. David walked out of the bedroom to investigate, and Anna popped out, gun drawn. They were each startled to see the other.
David told Anna that Proteus wasn't in the loft, and Anna said she was there, looking for Vanessa. David wondered why she was looking for his mother, and Anna told him about having the syringe tested. It had contained traces of a heart-attack-inducing drug, and it had only Vanessa's fingerprints on it. "Vanessa is Proteus" Anna said. David was speechless. He refused to believe Anna, and she began listing the proof they had against Vanessa.
David had a very difficult time swallowing the new information and insisted it had to be a sick joke. Anna tried to convince him further when she spied an object on the floor. She picked it up and showed David an earring. David assumed it was Greenlee's, but Anna pointed out that it was not Greenlee's style; it was a cheap "young person's" style. Anna told David he had to see that Proteus was Vanessa. The doorbell rang, and Bianca walked in. She was surprised to find David and Anna and told them she was looking for Leo.
Anna dropped the earring, and Bianca picked it up and recognized it as Maggie's. Bianca wondered what Maggie had been doing in Leo's apartment and where she was. She told Anna and David that Maggie had been trying to figure out the message Frankie had left in the book of sonnets and that she was on the trail of her sister's murderer. Anna said maybe Vanessa was holding Maggie against her will.
Meanwhile, Vanessa still had Maggie tied up in the wheelchair. Vanessa was on the phone with someone and was very angry to find out that Ryan had turned over the disk to the Feds. After hanging up, she turned to Maggie and asked if Maggie was afraid of her aunt. Maggie tried to put on a brave front and asked Vanessa to let her go, since "you don't kill family." Vanessa refused her request.
Maggie then said she'd been thinking about how Vanessa had tried to help Frankie. Vanessa said yes, she had tried to help Frankie, but Frankie had messed things up. Maggie said Frankie had fallen so deeply in love with Bianca that she had made stupid mistakes. Maggie asked Vanessa if she'd ever been in love. Vanessa said she had only ever loved her two sons then she turned on Maggie, accusing Maggie of trying to "humanize her" and keep her from killing Maggie.
Maggie said she knew Vanessa was human. Her mother had told her that "Aunt Vanessa didn't kill Uncle Charles." Vanessa snickered and said if he hadn't pulled the trigger, she would have, and that was something her ungrateful son David would never forget. Vanessa went on to say that Charles was useless, and he'd had to die.
Maggie asked if Vanessa had ever loved her husband, and Vanessa said no, she had only wanted a child. Charles couldn't compete with her love for David, so he had gone into business for himself, trying to make enough money to win Vanessa's love. But Vanessa knew what he was doing wasn't legal, and she had gone along with it anyway. But when Charles had made some promises that he hadn't been able to keep, which had resulted in threats against David's life, Vanessa said she had known it was time for her to take over.
Maggie was amazed at Vanessa's story. Vanessa continued, saying she had taken over "the operation," and Charles couldn't take the fact that she did it better than he had. He had killed himself, and "that was the best thing that ever happened to me," Vanessa told Maggie. Maggie was repulsed by her aunt's story. Vanessa said she was telling Maggie about her past "in order to comfort" her. She said that sisters could be very different. Maggie agreed and said she was very brave and for Vanessa not to underestimate her.
Vanessa said the next move was up to Maggie, and there were distinct advantages to making a deal with the devil. Maggie tried to talk Vanessa into letting her help Proteus, but Vanessa just laughed at her and said she didn't need anyone's help because she had Leo. Vanessa said she wasn't going to take the fall as Proteus, and she was going to set up David and have him go to prison, forever branded as the drug lord "Proteus."
Brooke and Edmund discussed the hit man's attempt on Ryan's life and concluded that it had been a setup. Simone entered and said it had definitely been a setup, and they wanted Ryan because she'd made it happen. Brooke asked for details, and Simone said she'd handled the whole situation badly. She admitted that she'd gotten emotionally involved with a married man and had thought she could handle it. She was angry that she was being pushed out of the Proteus investigation, and the only way she could "save face" was by continuing the story on her own.
A New York publisher had contacted Simone, saying they'd gotten wind of the story, and had offered her a book deal. Simone said she had been mad, hadn't looked closely enough, and had started to double agent herself. She said she'd overheard Chris, Mateo, and Hayley talking about Ryan having some evidence. Simone said she knew that the New York editor had actually been Proteus or an agent of Proteus and that she'd caused Chris to get shot.
Simone handed over her resignation to Edmund. He said what she had done stunk, but if she could convince herself that it was the worst thing she'd ever do, he'd still let her submit to Tempo. Simone was stunned and touched by Edmund and Brooke's faith in her. She told them she had been taken in for questioning the night before, and they asked if she had a lawyer yet. The discussion was interrupted when Edmund's help was needed in editing. He left the two women alone to talk.
Simone told Brooke she knew better than to fall for Mateo, and Brooke said love made its own rules. Simone admitted that she was still hung up on Mateo then asked how long Brooke and Edmund had known they loved each other. Brooke said it had been a long time, but the timing hadn't been right before. Edmund returned in time to hear that.
Simone left as Edmund walked in. He asked if the timing was right and planted a passionate kiss on Brooke. She laughed and said he couldn't rip her clothes off in her own office. Edmund asked if she could be ready to marry him by May, and she said absolutely.
Outside Chris's hospital room, Kendall tried to talk to Ryan about finding out Chris was his real father. However, Ryan didn't want to hear anything she had to say. Bianca arrived with coffee and sat down with them. Kendall told her that Erica had been in the room with Chris all night, and they didn't have any news. Kendall told her sister to go in and see Erica, who had asked for Bianca the night before.
In the hospital room, Erica talked out loud to Chris, saying he had done what he had because Ryan was his son, and he'd die for him. Chris began to open his eyes, and Erica was thrilled. A nurse entered and checked him out then left to get Joe Martin. Chris asked about Ryan, and Erica said he was fine and that he'd stayed at the hospital all night. Chris asked if he had been hurt, and Erica said no. She went to the hallway to ask Ryan to go in. Ryan refused and tried to leave.
Erica demanded that Ryan go in to see Chris, saying, "He took the bullet for you, you ungrateful louse!" Ryan finally went into Chris's room and stood at the foot of the bed. Chris looked up, and Ryan thanked him for what he had done. Chris tried to brush it off, saying, "Years of training." Erica was appalled at their behavior and said that Chris had taken the bullet because he was Ryan's father. Ryan didn't buy it, though, and said Chris was his father like Erica was Kendall's mother.
Outside the room, Kendall told Bianca how Erica had asked for Bianca the night before and that for one brief moment, she had wanted to help their mother. Bianca wasn't impressed and left without talking to Erica. Ryan told Chris he was glad Chris was okay and started to leave. Chris yelled out in pain and told Erica he couldn't move his legs. Ryan stood by as Joe rushed back in the room.
The nurse ushered Ryan and Erica outside while Joe told Chris the bad news. A bullet fragment had lodged too closely to his spine, and they hadn't been able to remove it during surgery. Joe said once Chris had his strength back, they'd go back in and try to remove the fragment. Chris said, "I don't get any guarantees, do I?"
In the hallway, Erica told Ryan not to feel guilty about what had happened. Ryan asked if that meant he owed Chris forever, saying, "He's no better than the other father I had." Erica went off on Ryan, and Kendall stepped in for Ryan. Ryan walked away, and Kendall followed him, while Erica just waited outside Chris's room.
Joe walked out and told Erica that Chris didn't want to see her again and told her about the bullet fragment. Erica didn't take that well and stormed into Chris's room. Chris told her to stay away from him and to keep Ryan away too. "Get the hell out of my life!" he bellowed. A brokenhearted Erica left the room.
Ryan visited Chris in the hospital. He told Chris he couldn't just walk away after what Chris had done for him. He wanted to do anything he could to help. Chris turned away, saying he'd heard enough of Ryan's "guilt-induced epiphany." Ryan left, not knowing what else to say or do. Chris placed a call to Derek. He wanted a search warrant issued for David's cabin and hotel room. Despite Joe Martin's assurances that David had saved his life, Chris was certain that David was Proteus.
Kendall was waiting in the hospital corridor for Ryan. She tried to convince him to stop blaming himself for Chris's injuries. Ryan was still in shock that Chris would take a bullet for him. Kendall moaned that Erica would never do such a thing for her. She said Erica would rather go blonde first. Ryan and Kendall struck a truce and decided they were friends.
On the island, Leo saw Greenlee and Jake sleeping next to each other. Leo accused Jake of doing more than just sleeping. That turned into an argument over whose fault it was that they were stranded. Greenlee had had enough. She asked to speak to Leo alone while Jake went off looking for firewood. Once alone, Greenlee batted her eyelashes and told Leo that she had been very afraid she would never see him again.
Leo was not about to be swayed by Greenlee's charms. He was still angry that he'd found her and Jake ready to make love. Greenlee, trying to defend her actions, mentioned how she'd felt when Leo had betrayed her with Laura. Before the argument could gather steam, Jake appeared with the announcement that the Coast Guard was heading their way. They were about to be rescued.
Maggie begged Vanessa to let her go. Hearing a knock at the pump house door, Vanessa slapped a piece of tape over Maggie's mouth before answering. Stuart and Marian, out for a day of cross-country skiing, had seen smoke from the chimney and had wondered who had been there. Vanessa explained that she'd had nowhere else to live after being banished from Cortland Manor. Marian made some snide remarks before Stuart dragged her away.
Next, Vanessa made a trip to David's cabin, where she uploaded all of Proteus' files to his computer. With wicked satisfaction, she told herself that since David had crossed her, he would pay. Vanessa received a call from Leo. He told her she had to leave the country -- that day.
The police were busy searching Greenlee's loft for clues on Maggie's disappearance while Bianca nervously told Jack about Maggie finding a code in the book of sonnets. She thought that discovery might have led to Maggie confronting Vanessa. David was there with Anna. He kept trying to reach Vanessa on her cell phone, but there was no answer. David confided to Anna that he was feeling guilty for introducing Vanessa to the heart-attack-inducing drug. Angrily, David vowed that if he found Vanessa before the police did, he'd kill her.
Moments later, David received a call from his security company that the alarm had been triggered at his cabin. David and Anna left to check it out. When they arrived at the cabin, David found nothing out of place, but he still sensed something was very wrong. He turned on his computer to see if anything there had been tampered with.
At the ice house, Vanessa received a phone call from Leo. He told her they needed to leave town, and he would meet her at the boathouse. There was nothing left for him in Pine Valley. Vanessa smiled approvingly as she agreed to meet him.
Vanessa confessed to Maggie that she had framed David. Maggie was surprised that Vanessa would do that to her own son. Vanessa justified her actions and told Maggie she was leaving her there. She promised someone would find Maggie eventually in the unheated ice house. Maggie, who was sitting in a wheelchair with her arms tied and her mouth taped, struggled to get free, to no avail.
Vanessa left the ice house to meet Leo at the boathouse. Maggie managed to get the tape off her mouth and screamed for help. She was afraid of freezing to death and asked Frankie to help her. She closed her eyes, hoping to rest for just a few minutes.
David checked his computer files to see if they had been tampered with. He found some unfamiliar files. As the police pounded on the door to David's cabin, David frantically tried to delete the files Proteus had copied to his computer. He realized they couldn't be deleted without a password.
Anna tried to help and told David to throw water on the computer. As David got a pitcher of water, the police and Detective Frye barged into the cabin with their guns drawn. A policeman checked the computer files and found those Proteus had left. David was arrested. He and his computer were taken to the police station.
At the police station, Anna tried to convince Derek Frye that Vanessa had framed David. David was still in denial that his mother was Proteus. Hayley and Mateo went to the police station to verify the files on David's computer matched the ones he had copied. They were the same. David was read his rights and taken to a cell.
Anna implored Mateo to tell the police that David had been framed. David told Anna to save her breath, as Mateo wouldn't help him. Mateo threatened David that Proteus would pay for what he had done. After David was locked in his cell, Mateo went to visit him.
Hayley and Mateo visited Chris Stamp at Pine Valley Hospital. Chris told them that he thought David had deliberately left a bullet fragment lodged by his spine so he wouldn't be able to walk. He was positive it was Proteus' MO to cripple his victims to cause suffering. Hayley disagreed with Chris's conclusion that David was Proteus and told him about the syringe that had been found with Vanessa's fingerprints. They didn't think Chris had objectivity about Proteus' identity. Chris didn't agree.
Chris's cell phone rang. Derek Fry told him David had been arrested, and they'd found the computer files that belonged to Proteus on David's computer. Chris expressed his frustration that Proteus was going down, and he couldn't be there to see it. He was stuck in the hospital. Hayley whispered to Mateo that she wasn't ready to count out Vanessa being Proteus.
After Hayley and Mateo left the hospital, Anna visited Chris Stamp in his hospital room and told him he had made a mistake. David was not Proteus. It was Vanessa. She implored him to have David released. Chris refused.
Vanessa, carrying her suitcase, jubilantly joined Leo at the boathouse. She was pleased that Leo wanted to leave town with her. She reminisced about the old times they'd spent together in Europe, running scams. Leo told her he wanted to pull one more scam before they left Pine Valley. Vanessa gleefully asked who it was. Leo told her she was the mark. Vanessa was stunned.
Leo told Vanessa he was not going anywhere with her. She told him to stop joking. Leo told Vanessa he knew she had tried to kill Greenlee and Jake and had left them in a sinking boat. He asked her how she could kill the woman he loved. He demanded the truth from Vanessa. Vanessa, in defiance, defended her behavior. Greenlee wasn't good enough for him, and she had been hurting Leo by flaunting her affection for Jake.
Vanessa, at last realizing that there was no use in covering up anymore, finally admitted to drugging Greenlee and Jake as well as killing Paolo and Larry. Leo didn't want to believe what he was hearing, even though he knew it was the truth. He was not ready to accept it until Vanessa reconfirmed she had done it all. He told Vanessa he had asked her to the boathouse so he could look her in the eye to tell her he couldn't stand her. Vanessa claimed that wasn't true and tried desperately to change his mind, telling him how much she loved him.
Leo replied that Vanessa didn't have a heart or soul and began to walk away from her. Vanessa implored him not to abandon her and told him to stop and turn around. As Leo turned around, he saw the pistol she was pointing at him. Leo challenged her to pull the trigger and walked slowly toward Vanessa. She warned him not to test her.
Bianca got into Greenlee's car as Greenlee and Jake were about to go to find Leo. She told them Leo's life was in danger. Greenlee told Bianca she would find Leo as Bianca got out of the car. As Greenlee was speeding all over Pine Valley, running red lights, looking for Leo, Jake told her to stop searching and go to the police station to report Vanessa's attack on them.
Greenlee suddenly saw Vanessa's car by the boathouse. They quietly parked the car and sneaked up to the boathouse. As they approached the entrance, they heard a gunshot.
